Unveiling a Survivor's Story
With so much uncertainty in the world, where chants of erasing identities echo across nations, I wanted to understand more about genocide.
My guest today is Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess, a survivor of the Bosnian genocide and an expert in genocide studies, preventing radicalization, and fostering peace through education. As a young girl, Amra endured unimaginable horrors, losing loved ones and witnessing the brutality of ethnic cleansing. Despite this, she emerged not with hate but with a mission to combat intolerance and violence.
We discuss her powerful memoir, The Cat I Never Named, which recounts her experiences surviving the Bosnian genocide, and her ongoing work in promoting resilience and peace through education. Amra shares insights into how communities and societies can protect themselves from the cycles of hate and violence that lead to such tragedies, and why empathy, education, and storytelling are essential tools for humanizing those who have been dehumanized.
This is an episode you won’t want to miss as we explore how we can prevent history from repeating itself and create a world where every human life is valued.
